Our Mission
We believe that dance is a natural human form of expression that we all are coded to understand. Formations strives to communicate with audiences through powerful performances in and around our home city of Birmingham, Alabama. Through athletic execution of emotionally evocative choreography, we ignite passion and awaken the spirit of dance that dwells in all of us.
Formations is also founded on the principle that dance should incorporate different forms of art, movement, and emotional concepts into performances. Merging of the arts is not only an effective means of lifting one another up, but it allows us to deliver heightened and more relatable experiences. Formations also strives to provide high-quality arts education to the community of emerging artists.
Our Origins
Formations began in 2019 as the official performance company of Forma Arts + Wellness. When Forma closed its doors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company shifted its focus to taking performances out into the community. Formations now operates as a professional company unaffiliated with any individual school, studio, or theatre.
Formations is comprised of dancers from a variety of backgrounds. Each brings their own beautiful form of movement and strength to the company, creating a pallet of beautiful individuals united with singular intent.
The company was founded by Director Whitney Renfroe in 2019.
Making a contribution to Formations is making a contribution to the arts.
Contributions of any size are vitally important to keep the company going, especially in these trying times. Formations Dance Company’s 501c-3 status is still pending at this time, so please be aware that any donation made this year will not be tax deductible.
